Oi, mate!

Won Cultural award at the 23rd Exhibition of the International Sumi-e Association, Tokyo
Sumi-e, also known as Suibokuga (水墨畫), is a minimalist, traditional art from East Asia (originally from China). It is a mindfully mindless form of creative meditation with Zen Buddhist roots. The artworks are composed mainly with black ink, with simple but expressive brushstrokes that capture the essence or spirit of the subject. The aim is to make a meaningful connection with our natural, living and seemingly non-living surroundings. The finished artworks are intentionally balanced out with empty spaces, creating a ‘yin-yang’ effect.

Nóra, originally from Hungary, is a Cambridge based sumi-e artist and certified instructor.
After a memorable trip to Sichuan, she started learning Chinese brush painting in 2014 under the guidance of Peter Cavaciuti.
In 2022 she became a member of the International Sumi-e Association where she gained her Sumi-e Instructor certificate.
Her works have been exhibited in the UK, Japan and Switzerland. At the Association’s annual exhibitions at the National Art Centre in Tokyo, two of her paintings have received awards.
Currently, she continues to deepen her knowledge and improve her skills at the Association’s advanced course and runs workshops in Cambridge, London and beyond.
Nora’s main themes and subjects are flowers and plants, inspired by her habitual observation and lifelong admiration of nature. Occasionally, she paints animals, landscapes and humorous or kawaii scenes inspired by Asian pop culture, folklore and her travels, too.
In harmony with her approach to art, she is doing her best to work with environmentally friendly and sustainable materials.
