Oi, mate!

Sumi-e, also known as Suibokuga (水墨畫), is a minimalist form of traditional art from East Asia. Mainly composed with black ink, with simple but expressive brushtrokes it aims to capture the essence or spirit of the subject while making a deep connection with our natural, living and non-living surroundings. The expressive brushwork is intentionally balanced out with empty spaces, creating a ‘yin-yang’ like atmosphere with a sense of silent harmony.
My main themes and subjects are flowers and plants, inspired by a habitual observation and admiration of nature. The artworks encourage the viewer to slow down, live in the moment and embrace the constant changes of life.
In harmony with my approach to nature, I am doing my best to work with environmentally friendly and sustainable materials. I love experimenting with different types of Chinese xuan, Japanese washi and Korean paper.
Occasionally, I paint animals, landscapes and scenes inspired by Asian folklore and my travels, too.

I am Nora, a Cambridge based sumi-e artist and instructor.
I started learning Chinese brush painting in 2014 after a memorable trip to Sichuan.
In 2022 I became a member of the International Sumi-e Association and gained my Sumi-e Instructor certificate in 2024.
I have exhibited my works in Cambridge and Tokyo, where two of my paintings have received awards.
Currently, I am a student at the Association’s advanced course and run workshops in Cambridge, London and beyond.
