Oi, mate!

Won Cultural award at the 23rd Exhibition of the International Sumi-e Association, Tokyo
Sumi-e, also known as Suibokuga (水墨畫), is a minimalist, traditional art from East Asia. It is a mindfully mindless creative form of meditation with Zen Buddhist roots. The artworks are composed with black ink mainly, with simple but expressive brushstrokes that capture the essence or spirit of the subject. The aim is to make a meaningful connection with our natural, living and non-living surroundings. The finished artworks are intentionally balanced out with empty spaces, creating a ‘yin-yang’ effect to promote a silent harmony.

Nora is a Cambridge based sumi-e artist and certified instructor.
After a memorable trip to Sichuan, she started learning Chinese brush painting in 2014 under the guidance of Peter Cavaciuti, former student of Fei Cheng Wu.
In 2022 she became a member of the International Sumi-e Association where she gained her Sumi-e Instructor certificate.
She has exhibited her works in the UK and Japan. In Tokyo, her paintings have received awards.
Currently, she continues to deepen her knowledge and improve her skills on the Association’s advanced course and runs workshops in Cambridge, London and beyond.
Nora’s main themes and subjects are flowers and plants, inspired by her habitual observation and admiration of nature. The artworks encourage the viewer to slow down, live in the moment and embrace the constant changes of life.
In harmony with her approach to nature, she is doing her best to work with environmentally friendly and sustainable materials. She loves experimenting with different types of Chinese xuan, Japanese washi and Korean papers.
Occasionally, she paints animals, landscapes and humorous scenes inspired by Asian folklore and her travels, too.
